“So if my Ma had gotten a good knock on the head and done the smart thing, she would’ve hooked up with that nice boy her aunt knew and my bastard of a father would’ve ended up in the U. S.?” It was funny how the world worked out, John thought. One missed step there, one second too late, and futures could go spinning apart like the halves of a roughly-chopped apple.

John stirred besides him, just enough to reach the ashtray they’d precariously balanced on the headboard. His last drag took his cigarette all the way down to the filter, cutting it fucking close. Cheeky. “Where he would’ve run into a nice Chinese girl in L. A. who had a grandma who knew how to curse a man into toeing the line.”

“Well, that explains your face.” Not that it was a bad one, John thought. Nothing of his Da in that, but the Asian bint must have been a hell of a looker. He pushed up on his elbows and pulled the sheet off the other man for a look-over. The Brit blood must’ve all gone into height.

“I’d like to hear the explanation for yours,” John playfully said, staring up through half-lidded eyes. He reached up to draw his hand down John’s chest, and John decided to follow it back towards the bed.

Snorting, he put out his own cigarette. “You just want a hit and you’re too lazy to light up another.”

The last dregs of smoke were stolen from his lungs before he got an answer. “Well, you would know.”
